ABAKUNDAKAWA GAKENKE
Rwanda | Cooperative
washed process
1700-1900 M.A.S.L.

Coffee from the Abakundakawa Cooperative, located in Rwanda's Gakenke district, is characterised by its sweet, floral, and fruit-forward notes. Abakundakawa has grown rapidly, adding a second washing station and expanding its membership from 180 to nearly 2,000 coffee growers since its founding in 2004. This co-op also represents a central economic and organising institution that builds local infrastructure and pays dividends to its members. The democratically elected leaders implement social development projects for the wider community, and the co-op's two women's associations focus on improving the livelihoods and security of women through diversification of income and social resiliency projects.
